A grid connect solar power system is one of the easiest ways to reduce your electricity bills, but if you don’t use it correctly you might be disappointed with the results.
Solar power is the process of changing light into electricity, and it is this electricity you can use to reduce your electricity bills. As the solar only works while there is sun light on the panels it is important that you try and use as much of this energy during the day.
How it works
In Australia our electricity is measured as we use it, including our solar power which is called “NET metered”. This means that as our solar system is producing power we will use this power first. Any extra we need we will buy from the grid. Any excess solar we don’t use will be exported to the grid and credited off your bill at a measly 6 cents. Unfortunately, without batteries there is no way of keeping this excess solar for later use so it is paramount you use this power rather than give it away.
How to get the most out of your system
To get the most out of your solar power system you must try and use as much of this solar power during the day to reduce buying electricity from the grid at night. Ways of doing this are to run dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, air conditioners and any other loads you can set during the day rather than at night. If you aren’t home during the day it makes it a little bit more difficult but new appliances often come with inbuilt timers which can be set to help with this.
So if you want to get the most from your solar power system remember reduce your night time load as much as you can and use the solar power you are producing during the day. This will help to maximise your return on your solar and reduce those electricity bills.
